Cariad's Story

Cariad which means sweetheart or love in welsh was named after two strong women in my own life, my mother and my grandmother. (not to forget the force of social justice that is my dad of course, he is where we get need for things to be fair and equal)

My mother grew up on a welsh hill farm in the 'valleys' and at the age of 18 secured a place at university leaving the very steep hill for a city where she had to learn how to buy a pint of milk in a shop for the first time. She is now a professor of social work and celebrated author. Achieving more than her wonderful and humble parents ever imagined . Showing me how to work hard and to show respect for everyone.

My grandmother born in a tiny welsh village (now a unesco site) travelled with her small baby (my dad) solo, in her early twenties, on a stolen German war ship to Hong Kong, on a 6 week passage so he could meet his father who was working on an air base out there. Her own dad clinging to her legs begging her not to go!  She will always be my hero and in a way every film I make is with her wicked sense of humour in mind.

Both of these women have shaped who I am, how I mother my own two, soon to be three, incredible children myself, my ambition, my tenacity and my determination. They made me believe Cariad could be real and now it is!
